Failed comedian Arthur Fleck, struggling with his dual identity, meets the love of his life, Harley Quinn, while imprisoned in Arkham State Hospital. Lady Gaga, Brendan Gleeson, and writer-director Todd Phillips share what scared them most about tackling the musical sequel. Plus, Gaga shares how she got into and stayed in her dark persona. This initially led to speculation that Harley Quinn would appear in the film, which was confirmed shortly afterward. The name Folie à Deux comes from 19th-century French psychiatrists Charles Lasègue and Jules Falret. The term was coined to refer to two or more people who share the same madness or delusion.

The jury foreman refers to “the people of New York” rather than Gotham City. Indeed, New York State is the plaintiff in a criminal trial and this version of Gotham City is obviously located in New York State (most versions place Gotham City in New Jersey). The film begins with a Looney Tunes title sequence, featuring the Warner Bros. logo surrounded by rings and the Joker’s face introduced in Crazy Cartoon Cast: The Wicked Discovery of a Lifetime (2022). The director continues to make a sequel that, unfortunately, is empty and has no character development. Phillips has outdone himself in making a film with great cinematography and visuals that portrays every feeling and emotion he wants to tell and express. BUT, he has failed to create a compelling story. From part one to part two, the characters in the film usually change. Your arc declines or bends.
Events/obstacles occur that change their lives
Or new characters enter your life, opening the door for more interesting events to come your way, resulting in a “Folie à Deux”. In this film, Joker/Arthur Fleck’s life doesn’t seem to change much with the addition of Gaga’s character Lee. Instead, the film keeps repeating its events by REVIEWING the past (the first Joker film) or reacting to some of its scenes. It also keeps going back and forth to the same places and events in that same film. The result is an overall boring movie that is ONLY visually entertaining. This movie introduces two main characters from the world of Gotham, Harvey Dent, who is terribly played by Harry Lawtey and written even worse.
But the song choices were off
By the end of the movie, I felt like he was useless and taking advantage of his “name” within the comic book fandom. Same goes for Lady Gaga’s Lee, who seemed like he wasn’t in this movie. I enjoyed how this movie uses music/songs to show that it is an ESCAPE for our inner selves. On the other hand, the performance was well done by Gaga or the filmmaking skills of Joaquin Phoenix and Lawrence Sher.
