What’s the consensus?
Featured in Hollywood’s Top 10: Critics Choice Nominees: Drama (2011). Main Title (uncredited) Written and performed by Ramin Javadi. Let’s say you’re reading these reviews and haven’t seen GoT yet, but now that it’s over, you’re considering binge-watching it. In this case, the consensus is accurate and it’s: Seasons 1-6: Excellent. Deep world-building, clever dialogue, epic Hollywood-worthy set pieces, expert acting, detailed plot, genuine surprises, great soundtrack used sparingly.
GoT is definitely worth watching during these seasons
Season 7: Suddenly you realize that the quality of the writing and plot has dropped dramatically. There are unexplained ideas, inconsistent characterizations, and soapy drama. But at least the entertainment value is still very high, so it gets a pass. Season 8: This fall, it reaches depths you never thought possible. The writing has become so amateurish that the still-fantastic production values are no longer enough to save it.
Fatal to the fiction
If you once enjoyed Lost but were surprised by how bad the last season was, you’re on familiar territory here. The biggest problem with the last season was that it took us out of the story and made us think about its many weaknesses. We lost our suspension of disbelief. It also ruined the show’s arcs to the point where it was pointless to rewatch the entire series. So can I recommend a GoT marathon for newcomers?
But it’s not the best show ever
Yes, the first 6 seasons are worth the disappointments that followed. It could have been, but dropping the ball late puts it behind the following superb series more worthy of your binge: Battlestar Galactica (2003-2008) Twin Peaks (all 3 seasons, plus the movie) Breaking Bad
