Physical sets, practical creatures and miniatures were used wherever possible to aid further VFX work
Chronology
While scavenging the depths of an abandoned space station, a group of young space colonists come face to face with the most terrifying life form in the universe.. Director Fede Alvarez explains the rule he set for Alien: Romulus that “if you can be practical, it will be practical," so the cast always acted opposite a physical representation of the xenomorph… Director Fede Alvarez sought out the special effects team from Alien 2 (1986) to work on the creatures. When Rain shuts down the ship’s gravity and shoots all the aliens, all their blood sprays into the air in long, blurry patterns. Zero gravity in real life causes liquids to form into a sphere rather than spread out in long, flat pieces like in the movie..

Andy: The solution for a claustrophobic astronaut is to give him more space.. 20th Century Studios fanfare freezes and it gets sinister, like in Alien 3 (1992), leading to the opening scene of the film. The logo itself suffers a burst of static electricity and turns green.. Featured on Nerdrotic: The Acolyte: Force is Female CONFIRMED? Because the rest is so good
I had high hopes for this one and what can I say: I just went back to the theater again after the first performance because I couldn’t wait to see it a second time. Remember how we always wondered if Alien and Blade Runner were set in the same universe? The world building was so well done and involving that I was almost disappointed to remember after 30 minutes that I was supposed to be watching an alien movie. almost. The way the characters are built in relation to each other and against what happens is masterful.
There’s no downtime, there’s always something going on
I also like how the movie re-unites thematically and logically ALL 6 movies that came out before (there’s a nod to each one and I’m sad for a good candy if it’s done on purpose) as you go about your business. Because this IS a Fede Alvarez film, as fresh and dynamic as the other films he’s made. Finally, you just have to see the opening: as soon as the computer lights up, you know where you are, and you know it will be as respectful and familiar as possible. True, there are liberties taken with the lore, and some will argue with reason, but I personally can forgive those shortcuts because they serve the pacing (and every movie has its specific xenomorphs anyway). It checks the boxes but is also unique and special.
It was worth the wait
